Ford Fund’s Men of Courage Honors Game Changers

Award recognizes nonprofits working to change lives, improve communities

DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford Fund is pleased to announce three new Men of Courage Game Changer Award winners. The $5,000 award recognizes organizations that help Black men make a positive impact in their communities through education, business and/or social equity. The three winners were selected from a pool of more than 60 applications made to Men of Courage, a national program by Ford Fund designed to advance the narrative of African American men through storytelling and community programs.

Ahmed Muhammad, Kit's Cubed, Oakland, California – Making science fun for elementary students with simple experiment kits. The kits were initially created for low-income students in Oakland, Calif. They are now available online for purchase.

Sean Williams, The Dad Gang, New York, New York – Changing the world's perception of Black fatherhood through community events such as stroller marches, panel discussions and brunch with kids. The Dad Gang celebrates Black dads with their truth while crushing stereotypes. Chapters and events are springing up across the country.

Roderick T. Heath, Ed. D., Men's Achievement Center, North Carolina Central University, Durham, North Carolina – Enriching the quality of the college experience for Black males students, ensuring they achieve success on campus and off. Through laser-focused programming and one-on-one mentoring, Men's Achievement Center shines a bright light on the best in everyone.

"Each of these innovative organizations are changing the game and changing lives in unique ways that not only benefit individuals, but also families and communities," said Justin Kimpson, manager, Ford Fund's Men of Courage. "We're always discovering new and interesting programs that are strengthening our communities. We're proud to highlight their amazing work and advance their future success."

The awards were presented virtually by Pro Football Hall of Fame running back and Ford Men of Courage program advocate Jerome Bettis in partnership with The Bus Stops Here Foundation.

Winners from the first-ever Men of Courage Game Changer Award in 2020 include, I Am A Gentleman, which is focused on successful careers and personal development, Brother Let's Talk, which addresses mental health and emotional wellness, and Teen Hype, which promotes future-oriented thinking and avoiding risky behaviors.

Launched in Detroit in 2015, Men of Courage connects Black men from local communities to build relationships and change the conversation around African American men in society. Men of Courage has grown into an essential and enduring part of Ford Fund's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
